Bakersfield, CA — Around noon on Sunday, October 25, 2026, a pedestrian lost his life in a hit-and-run collision, which led to the arrest of 39-year-old Calvin Dugan, of Bakersfield, according to KBAK.
At approximately 12:06 PM, officers with the Bakersfield Police Department responded to reports of an accident at Olympia and Gallup drives.
Upon arriving at the scene, they discovered a man in the roadway who had sustained severe injuries and a vehicle with what appeared to be sideswipe damage parked nearby on the south shoulder. However, the vehicle responsible for both could not be found. The suspect had fled the scene.
Emergency responders transported the pedestrian to a nearby hospital. Despite the lifesaving efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries.
According to initial investigations, the pedestrian appeared to have been either entering or exiting the parked vehicle with sideswipe damage before being struck by a black Dodge Challenger traveling eastbound on Olympia that had veered from its lane.
Investigators located the Challenger in a nearby neighborhood, where it had apparently been abandoned. Bakersfield PD arrested Dugan at his home on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
The investigation is ongoing.
Fatal Pedestrian Hit-and-Runs in Bakersfield and Wrongful Death Claims
In addition to prohibiting operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, California law requires drivers to stay with any injured parties after being involved in an accident. Failure to do so may be charged as a felony in cases where the victim is killed or left with serious, permanent injuries.
Regardless of the outcome of any criminal proceedings, the family of the pedestrian who lost his life may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim with Dugan’s insurance provider. A wrongful death claim can provide compensation for damages such as funeral expenses and the loss of support and companionship the deceased provided.
