Fairfield, CA — In the early hours of Sunday, October 25, 2026, a collision involving a big rig resulted in a female pedestrian losing her life, according to KCRA.
Around 1:00 AM, officers with the California Highway Patrol responded to reports of a large obstruction on Interstate 80 near the Cordelia Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Facility scales, in a rural area east of Suisun Creek.
Upon arriving at the scene, CHP discovered a woman who had been killed and closed traffic lanes on I-80 for several hours to allow investigators to examine the scene.
Initial investigations suggest that the pedestrian had been in the far-right lane when she was struck by a 2015 Peterbilt big rig that had merged onto westbound I-80 from State Route 12. The 59-year-old Oakley man who had been driving the Peterbilt reportedly believed he had struck a large box that damaged his vehicle’s radiator.
This led him to stop at the scales, where officers found him. Investigators were able to connect the Peterbilt to the fatal crash through physical evidence on the truck itself.
Driver intoxication is not believed to be a factor in the fatal accident. The investigation is ongoing.
Pedestrian Accidents in California and Wrongful Death Claims
California law requires drivers to exercise a greater duty of care toward pedestrians due to their vulnerability to serious injuries in a collision. Accidents involving big rigs can be particularly dangerous for pedestrians, both because of the greater force of impact created by the vehicle’s size and weight and the difficulty truck drivers may experience seeing over the hood of the big rig to identify potential hazards.
The family of the woman who lost her life in this pedestrian crash may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim with the insurance provider of the Peterbilt driver. A wrongful death claim can provide compensation for damages such as funeral expenses and the loss of companionship and support from the deceased. If negligence on the pedestrian’s part is found to have contributed to the fatal accident, any settlement may be reduced, but that would not bar her loved ones from seeking compensation.
