Vallejo, CA — In the early hours of Thursday, October 22, 2026, a 71-year-old man from Vallejo lost his life after being struck by a Tesla believed to be in self-driving mode, according to KRON.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal collision took place at approximately 2:34 AM on westbound Interstate 80 at the Interstate 780 interchange.
Investigators stated that the Tesla had been driven by a 26-year-old San Francisco man, traveling westbound in the middle lane at a speed of roughly 70 MPH. The elderly pedestrian reportedly entered the freeway from the right shoulder and crossed toward the center divider when he was struck by the Tesla.
Video of the fatal crash shows the driver attempting to brake and swerve left to avoid the pedestrian, but striking him with the right front of the Tesla regardless.
After the initial impact, while he was lying on the road, the pedestrian was struck by at least one other vehicle, which did not stop.
The Tesla driver remained with the pedestrian and cooperated with authorities. He shared his vehicle’s dashcam footage with investigators and said that it was operating in Full Self-Driving autonomous mode.
After closing for investigators, all lanes of westbound I-80 reopened by 4:43 AM.
The Solano Area CHP office asks that any member of the public with information about this accident step forward, particularly in regard to the other vehicles that hit the pedestrian without stopping. This is an ongoing investigation.
