Two Children on Bicycles Injured in Grandview Blvd, Golden Gate Ave Hit-and-Run; Suspect Robert Schumann, 37, Arrested

Half Moon Bay, CA — In the early evening of Saturday, October 17, 2026, two children, both 6 years old, were struck while riding their bicycles by a driver who fled the scene, leading to the arrest of Robert Schumann, 37, of San Francisco, according to KRON.

At approximately 5:45 PM, San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to reports of a hit-and-run near Grandview Boulevard and Golden Gate Avenue, in a small neighborhood off the Cabrillo Highway (SR-1).

Emergency responders found two children with major injuries at the crash site. Both received transportation to a nearby hospital for treatment. They were last reported to be in stable condition.

Based upon a witness statement describing the suspect and vehicle and working with the Daly City Police Department, deputies located Schumann near Bancroft Avenue, where he was reportedly hiding in a wooded area.

After finding evidence that Schumann may have been driving under the influence, deputies arrested him on suspicion of DUI causing bodily injury, hit-and-run resulting in injury, driving with a suspended license due to a prior DUI conviction, and operating a vehicle with blood alcohol over .01 while on probation. Schumann was booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility.

Half Moon Bay Bicycle Hit-and-Run Accidents

California law requires drivers to exercise an extra duty of care toward bicyclists, who are highly susceptible to serious injury in a collision, as well as to children. In areas where children may be active, like schools, parks, and the residential neighborhood where this accident occurred, drivers are expected to slow down, remain alert, and be ready to stop suddenly.

If Schumann is convicted of DUI, he may be found to have committed “negligence per se,” which means that by violating a traffic safety law, he will have met the legal definition of negligence in this accident. Independent of any criminal proceedings, the parents of the two injured bicyclists may have grounds to pursue personal injury claims with Schumann’s insurance provider. A personal injury claim can provide compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, and other damages.
