Hwy 183, San Jon Rd Multi-Vehicle Crash Involving Big Rig Injures 3 in Monterey County

Monterey County, CA — On Tuesday, October 13, 2026, a multi-vehicle collision injured three truck drivers and spilled celery across Highway 183, according to KSBW, with additional details provided by CHP Big Rig.

The accident involved a pickup truck, box truck, and big rig, CHP Monterey reports. It took place on Highway 183 near San Jon Road (reported as San Juan Road elsewhere).

At the time of reporting, few details have been released as to what may have caused the crash, which was first reported as a big rig versus pickup truck collision at 4:46 PM. However, it resulted in the drivers of all three vehicles receiving injuries that ranged from moderate to major. They were transported by emergency responders to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The big rig involved had been hauling a trailer carrying celery, which overturned, causing its load to spill onto Highway 183. CHP Monterey reports that traffic was diverted to Cooper Road and McFadden Road, and both directions of Highway 183 were closed between the two roads. Accident logs show that the roadway was cleared and reopened around 10:22 PM.

This is an ongoing investigation.

Monterey Truck Accidents and Personal Injury Claims

While many details of this accident remain unknown, what is known is that the heavier the vehicle, the more force it brings in an impact. That is why the injuries from truck accidents can often be severe and may require multiple surgeries, long recovery periods, and specialized mobility devices for the victim.

Determining liability in a multi-vehicle accident can be complex, but because California law operates under the principle of comparative negligence, fault is not an all-or-nothing proposition. It can be shared to varying degrees among more than one of the parties involved.

Even if a driver’s own negligence may have contributed, in part, to the accident that caused their injuries, they may still have grounds to pursue a personal injury claim. A personal injury claim can provide compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages stemming from the accident.

However, any settlement received may be reduced in proportion to the negligence of the recipient.
