Fiery Plane Crash Kills 2 near Petaluma Municipal Airport on Sky Ranch Dr

Petaluma, CA — On the morning of Wednesday, October 7, 2026, a plane taking off from Petaluma Municipal Airport crashed into a nearby golf course, killing the two people inside, according to KRON.

The Petaluma Police Department reports that the plane took off around 10:40 AM and crashed soon after onto Rooster Run Golf Course on East Washington Street.

Emergency responders found the plane, a Van’s RV/7A, completely engulfed in flames, and the Petaluma Fire Department extinguished the smoldering wreckage by dousing it with water. Two occupants, both deceased, were found within the plane, which the crash appeared to have destroyed completely.

According to the website of the manufacturer, Van’s Aircraft, the RV-7/7A is described as a small kit aircraft that seats two adults side-by-side, capable of aerobatic loops and rolls and appropriate for cross-country travel. As a kit aircraft, the RV-7/7A is assembled by the owner, not a factory, and there are federal requirements to ensure that amateur-built aircraft can be certified as airworthy. However, the RV-7/7A might also be available to purchase already assembled from a previous owner.

Petaluma PD requested that drivers avoid the area around the crash site, specifically East Washington Street between Garfield Drive and Adobe Road, where some of the roads had been closed.

The identity of those who lost their lives in the crash has not yet been released. Both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating what events may have led to this fatal accident.

Petaluma Fatal Aircraft Accidents and Wrongful Death Claims

When the negligence of another party leads to someone losing their life, a wrongful death claim provides a way for grieving families a way to make sure those who are responsible are also held accountable. While no amount of money can return a lost loved one, a wrongful death claim can provide compensation for such damages as funeral expenses and the loss of support and companionship provided by the deceased.

In this particular accident, the passenger’s surviving family may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim with the pilot’s insurance provider, as well as any third party whose negligence might have also been a factor. For the pilot’s family to be able to pursue a wrongful death claim on their behalf, investigations would have to prove third-party negligence, such as manufacturer or maintenance neglect leading to equipment failure. However, the settlement provided may be reduced by the degree to which the pilot’s own actions contributed to the fatal crash.
