Bakersfield, CA – On the afternoon of Wednesday, September 16, 2026, a single-vehicle collision resulted in the death of Dale Edward Carver, 85, of Salem, Oregon, after his pickup truck struck a tree and caught fire, according to KBAK.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 12:02 PM on southbound Highway 99 north of Houghton Road, a stretch of freeway on Bakersfield’s south side.
Authorities said Carver was driving a 2011 Dodge Ram southbound within an unknown lane at an unknown rate of speed when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle veered right onto the dirt shoulder and collided with a tree. As a result of the impact, the Dodge became fully engulfed in flames with Carver pinned inside.
Nearby individuals attempted to extinguish the fire with fire extinguishers before it fully engulfed the vehicle. Fire personnel responded to the scene. Carver sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Kern County Coroner’s Office formally identified him following his death.
Lane three of southbound Highway 99 north of Houghton Road was closed while units completed the investigation. The coroner was notified and responded to the scene.
It is unknown whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.
