And because it spans about 20,000 square miles in the middle of the state, it has a little bit of everything. But from a community perspective, the core of the Central Valley is made up of cities and towns like:

With so many different types of communities and activities, there are also many different ways accidents can happen. Someone driving on Interstate 5 faces different risks than someone working on a farm, walking through a city, working at a construction site, or visiting a state park. That’s why it’s worth looking at the different kinds of accidents that happen here and the data behind you.
Car Accidents in the Central Valley
Like a lot of areas, car accidents are by far the most common type of accident that happens here in the Central Valley. It’s not hard to figure out why: everybody has to drive. And unfortunately, the more time you spend on the road, the higher the chances are that you’ll be in a car accident.
According to data from the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), Central Valley cities that averaged the most car accidents between 2021 and 2025 were:
- Sacramento – 3,600.8 per year
- Fresno – 1,619.8 per year
- Bakersfield – 1,420.8 per year
- Stockton – 1,405.8 per year
- Modesto – 1,395 per year
- Turlock – 327.2 per year
- Visalia – 406.6 per year
- Porterville – 275.2 per year
While these numbers are averages, it’s important to look at context. Sacramento and Fresno are the two largest cities in the Valley by a pretty wide margin, so it’s not all that surprising that they lead the way in terms of average number of car accidents. At the same time, every car accident is different and has to do with the prevailing conditions and circumstances. That’s why it’s also helpful to know what the underlying causes usually are:
- Speeding or unsafe lane changes
- Driving under the influence of drugs/alcohol
- Not yielding the right of way
- Making an illegal or unsafe turn
- Texting or otherwise being distracted
So yes, car accidents are a big part of injuries here in the Central Valley. But it’s far from the only risk there is.
Passengers and Car Accident Injuries in the Central Valley
When you think about the dangers that come with a car accident, you probably think about driving your own car. But what a lot of people don’t realize is that everyone in the car faces the same risk of injury in an accident—and sometimes more depending on the circumstances.
And if you think about it, that’s not all that surprising. As a passenger, you don’t have any control over the actual vehicle, and you also have to deal with:
- Not being able to brace yourself right before a collision
- Taking impact directly in a sideswipe, head-on or rear-end collisions
- Sitting at a bad angle at the time of a collision
- Being exposed to broken glass or loose objects where you’re sitting
- Being injured by a seatbelt or being in an accident because you’re not wearing one
Again, drivers also have to deal with these disadvantages in a car accident, but it just hits differently when you’re a passenger. More to the point, there’s data from SWITRS that shows this more clearly. Between 2021 and 2025, passengers in Central Valley car accidents were injured at an average clip of:
- Sacramento – 118.8 per year
- Bakersfield – 93.6 per year
- Fresno – 68 per year
- Stockton – 67.8 per year
- Modesto – 56.2 per year
- Turlock – 24 per year
- Visalia – 18 per year
- Manteca – 14.8 per year
Obviously, there’s nothing inherent to the Central Valley that makes a passenger more or less likely to be injured in a car accident. But as the data shows, it’s still a risk. With that said, though, location actually does come into play for other types of accidents here.
Injury Risks For Pedestrians in the Central Valley
A car might be the most common way people get from one point to another in the Central Valley, but it’s far from the only mode of transportation there is here. And the simplest form of transportation is also one of the riskiest: moving on foot. As a pedestrian, there’s some obvious disadvantages when you’re walking around:
- Nothing to protect you from a vehicle
- Harder for drivers to see you, especially at night
- No sidewalk or safe place to walk
- Few crosswalks or safe places to cross
- Busy roads with fast-moving traffic
- Cars blocking a driver’s view
- Construction or roadwork changing walking paths
- Poorly maintained sidewalks and walkways
- Bad weather making it harder to see or walk safely
- Drivers who don’t see or yield to you
- Longer distances to medical care in rural areas
- A much greater risk of serious injury when you’re hit
This covers a lot of the risks, and what you might notice is that you’ll find these risks virtually everywhere in the Central Valley. But according to SWITRS data, a few cities here were among the statewide leaders in pedestrian injuries between 2021 and 2025:
- Sacramento – 271.8 per year
- Fresno – 182 per year
- Bakersfield – 141.4 per year
- Stockton – 119.8 per year
- Modesto – 110.6 per year
- Visalia – 38.6 per year
- Turlock – 23 per year
- Elk Grove – 21.6 per year
You can obviously see the variance in the numbers here. That has a lot to do with the fact that places like Sacramento and Fresno have more people than places like Turlock or Elk Grove. Still, the injury risks that pedestrians face are consistent throughout the Central Valley. And that also goes for other types of accidents, too.
How Many Bicycle Accidents Does the Central Valley Average?
Riding a bicycle is another part of living in the Central Valley that seems ideal on its face, but changes when you’re in an accident. Yes, there’s nearly ideal conditions in terms of weather and infrastructure, but again, problems come up when you’re on a bike and have to deal with:
- Cars that don’t see you
- Busy roads and fast-moving traffic
- No bike lane or safe place to ride
- Cars passing too closely
- Parked cars blocking bike lanes
- Potholes, debris, and uneven roads
- Poor lighting and visibility at night
- Drivers who don’t give cyclists enough space
- Road construction or changing traffic patterns
- A much greater risk of serious injury in an accident
You’ll find these things across the Central Valley, but it’s also about the actual data. SWITRS data shows that, between 2021 and 2025, bike accidents involving injuries happened in the following cities:
- Sacramento – 206.6 per year
- Stockton – 90.8 per year
- Fresno – 86 per year
- Modesto – 82 per year
- Bakersfield – 78 per year
- Clovis – 26.2 per year
- Visalia – 26.2 per year
- Turlock – 24.2 per year
While biking in the Central Valley can be a healthy and enjoyable way to get around, this data shows just how likely injuries are in the event of an accident. And like our next topic, it’s the likelihood of injury combined with other factors that make bike accidents much more impactful for you.
What the Data Says About Motorcycle Accidents in the Central Valley
Just like bicycles, motorcycles are another popular mode of transportation in the Central Valley. And it’s for a lot of the same reasons. There’s ideal conditions in terms of weather, but there’s many of the same disadvantages when it comes to being in an accident, like:
- Having virtually no protection from the force of the accident
- Being harder for other drivers to see as well as being harder for drivers to judge your distance or speed
- Higher exposure to road hazards,debris, or otherwise poor road conditions
- Greater risk of being thrown from your motorcycle in the event of an accident
All of these things add up to one thing: injuries. Data from SWITRS seemingly backs this up, too. Between 2021 and 2025, motorcycle accidents in the following Central Valley cities resulted in injuries to riders:
- Sacramento – 190.2 per year
- Fresno – 92.2 per year
- Bakersfield – 89.4 per year
- Modesto – 80.2 per year
- Stockton – 56.6 per year
- Manteca – 24 per year
- Visalia – 22.6 per year
- Elk Grove – 20.2 per year
Remember, there’s nothing inherent about riding a motorcycle in any of these cities that causes accidents and injuries. Rather, it’s more about the circumstances. There’s obviously greater risks in bigger cities with more drivers, but at the same time, more rural areas of the Central Valley have accident risks, also.
When Accidents Turn Fatal in the Central Valley
By far the worst outcome of any accident here in the Central Valley is a fatality. It’s something nobody wants to think about—let alone go through. But unfortunately, there’s SWITRS data on these types of accidents, too. Between 2021 and 2025, the following cities in the Central Valley recorded fatal accidents at the following clip:
- Fresno – 61.4 per year
- Sacramento – 60.4 per year
- Bakersfield – 54.8 per year
- Stockton – 32 per year
- Modesto – 20.6 per year
- Visalia – 11 per year
- Rancho Cordova – 8.4 per year
- Elk Grove – 7 per year
There’s something important to think about here: this data is compiled from SWITRS, which is focused on traffic accidents. That obviously doesn’t factor in other sources of fatalities in the Central Valley like workplace accidents, drownings, or intentional criminal acts. On the flip side, the vast majority of recorded fatal accidents are going to relate back in some way to a traffic accident. And any traffic accident can turn fatal under the right conditions.
