Alvarado-Niles, Decoto Rd Crash Kills Passenger, 14, in Union City

Union City, CA – On the morning of Friday, September 11, 2026, a two-vehicle collision resulted in injuries that proved fatal to a 14-year-old girl, marking the city’s third traffic fatality of the year, according to KRON.

The Union City Police Department reports that the accident took place around 8:04 AM at Alvarado-Niles Road and Decoto Road, a busy commercial intersection in central Union City.

Authorities said the girl was seated in the front passenger seat of a Mazda sedan when it collided with a large commercial box truck. She sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local trauma center, where she died days later.

The drivers of both vehicles remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. Police do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

Union City Car Accidents and Wrongful Death Claims

California law requires all drivers, including operators of commercial vehicles, to exercise reasonable care at intersections, including yielding the right of way when appropriate and remaining alert to cross traffic. When a collision at an intersection results in a fatality, investigators with California law enforcement examine the actions of both drivers, as well as the size and weight disparity between the vehicles involved, to determine liability.

Because the crash involved a commercial box truck, the trucking company’s driver qualification and vehicle maintenance records could become relevant to establishing liability, in addition to the more immediate question of which driver had the right of way at the intersection. The family of the girl who lost her life may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim, which can provide compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, loss of consortium, and other damages related to the fatal accident.
