Fresno, CA – On the afternoon of Friday, August 28, 2026, a single-vehicle collision resulted in a fatality and a widespread power outage in southeast Fresno, according to ABC30.
The Fresno Police Department reports that the crash occurred around 4:30 PM at the intersection of Willow Avenue and Iowa Avenue.
Authorities said a sedan collided with a power pole, shearing the pole at its base and causing live power lines to collapse onto the vehicle. The driver managed to exit the car following the impact and approached the downed wires, touching or attempting to move them, which ignited a fire.
Fresno Fire crews and Hazmat personnel arrived to find the car fully engulfed in flames with live wires arcing over it. After putting out the fire, emergency responders located the driver outside the vehicle, where they were pronounced dead.
The collision knocked out electricity to roughly 3,000 customers in the area and forced law enforcement to close the intersection of Tulare and Willow Avenues in all directions.
Police have not released the identity of the deceased, nor have officers confirmed whether speed, mechanical failure, or alcohol were contributing factors in the crash. The accident remains under investigation.
