I-80 Big Rig Crash Kills Driver, Injures Passenger near Donner Pass Rd in Truckee

Truckee, CA – On the morning of Wednesday, August 26, 2026, a fatal single-vehicle big rig collision resulted in the death of the driver and injured a passenger, according to KCRA, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 9:29 AM on Interstate 80 near the Donner Pass Road off-ramp and Highway 89.

Authorities said the semi-truck went off the roadway, crashed through a fence, and came to rest in a ditch near the river on the right-hand shoulder. Emergency medical personnel and the Nevada County coroner responded to the scene, where the driver was pronounced dead.

A passenger in the cab of the big rig was later transported by Truckee Fire Department medics to Tahoe Forest Hospital for evaluation and treatment.

Caltrans closed the right lane of Interstate 80 to facilitate heavy-duty recovery operations. Fish and Wildlife, Office of Emergency Services, and Graymar Environmental Hazmat were notified to respond to the scene, and the cause of the collision remains under investigation.

CHP has not released whether speed or alcohol were factors in the crash, as those details remain under investigation.

Passenger Liability and Personal Injury Claims

A driver’s liability coverage extends to those inside their vehicle as well as outside. In many cases, those passengers are someone who knows the driver personally. So, when a passenger is injured and their driver is found liable, they may feel reluctant to file a claim against the driver’s insurance.

In many cases, however, a personal injury claim may be required for an insurer to offer a fair settlement. A personal injury attorney can facilitate this process and, as a neutral third party, help navigate any emotional complexities that may arise.

Truckee Big Rig Accidents and Wrongful Death Claims

California law follows the principle of comparative negligence. This means that even if a driver is found partially at fault for an accident, their surviving family members may still pursue compensation if the negligence of another party, such as a road hazard, brake malfunction, or defective vehicle equipment, contributed to the crash. Investigators with California law enforcement examine factors such as speed, roadway conditions, and vehicle condition to determine what role outside factors may have played.

Regardless of the findings, the family of the deceased and the injured passenger may have the right to pursue a wrongful death or personal injury claim. A wrongful death or personal injury claim can provide compensation for medical expenses, funeral costs, loss of financial support, loss of consortium, and other damages related to the fatal accident.
