East Palo Alto, CA – On the morning of Thursday, August 20, 2026, a single-vehicle motorcycle collision resulted in a fatality, according to KRON, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place just after 6:00 AM on southbound Highway 101 near the University Avenue on-ramp.
Authorities said the motorcyclist was found down in the slow lane, with the vehicle blocking traffic. As a result of the crash, the rider sustained severe injuries. San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office and emergency medical services responded to the scene.
A SigAlert was issued closing lanes four and five of southbound Highway 101 at University Avenue, with an unknown estimated time of opening. The on-ramp to southbound Highway 101 was also temporarily blocked. An evidence tow was requested for the motorcycle, identified as a Royal Enfield.
Investigators worked to locate a vehicle believed to be associated with the crash, described as a black Infiniti or Acura, using cell phone location data provided by the registered owner’s carrier. Sunnyvale Police Department located a suspect vehicle at a residence on Leota Avenue, though the connection to the crash was still being determined. An evidence tow was also requested for a black Acura TL found locked at the scene.
The two right lanes of southbound Highway 101 south of University Avenue, along with the University Avenue on-ramp, reopened by 9:10 AM, with residual delays expected. The SigAlert was cancelled following the reopening.
Further details of the crash were not immediately available. The investigation remains ongoing.
San Mateo County Motorcycle Accidents and Wrongful Death Claims
California law follows the principle of comparative negligence. This means that even if a rider is found partially at fault for an accident, their surviving family members may still pursue compensation if the negligence of another party, such as another driver involved in the crash, contributed to the fatal outcome. Investigators with California law enforcement examine the actions of all parties involved to determine what role each may have played.
Regardless of the findings, the family of the deceased may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. A wrongful death claim can provide the family with compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, loss of consortium, and other damages related to the fatal accident.
