Madera County, CA – In the early hours of Saturday, July 18, 2026, a rear-end collision with a big rig resulted in the deaths of Samantha Xiongnhiathao, 50, and her daughter, Gisselle Diaz, 17, both of Fresno, according to KSEE/KGPE.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 2:00 AM on Highway 152 at Road 14 ½.
Authorities said a 32-year-old Fresno man was driving a 2019 Freightliner Cascadia eastbound on Highway 152 at approximately 10 to 15 miles per hour with hazard lights activated due to engine difficulties. Xiongnhiathao was driving a black Honda with Diaz seated in the right front passenger seat when she struck the rear of the trailer, and the Honda became wedged underneath it.
Following the impact, the truck driver moved to the right shoulder, unaware that the Honda remained trapped beneath the trailer. Both Xiongnhiathao and Diaz died at the scene. The driver of the Freightliner was not injured. All parties were wearing seatbelts. The Madera County Coroner’s Office formally identified both victims following the crash.
In a GoFundMe established by her family, Diaz was remembered as an extraordinary young woman with a bright future. Xiongnhiathao was remembered as a woman of deep faith whose life was rooted in love, compassion, and service to others. Family organizers described the loss as unimaginable.
The investigation remains ongoing.
