Fairfax, CA – On the evening of Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a pedestrian collision resulted in the death of George Pikkarainen, 91, of Fairfax, on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, according to KRON.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 6:45 PM on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard east of Shadow Creek Court in the Oak Manor neighborhood.
Authorities said a 22-year-old Martinez man was driving a white Volkswagen Passat westbound on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard when he struck Pikkarainen as he was crossing the roadway northward.
First responders found Pikkarainen with multiple traumatic injuries and began emergency medical aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Marin County Sheriff’s Office formally identified him following his death.
The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was not injured, and was not arrested.
The roadway was closed in both directions while officers investigated and the coroner attended to the scene, reopening following the conclusion of on-scene proceedings. An evidence tow was requested for the Volkswagen sedan.
Authorities determined that alcohol and drugs were not factors in the collision. The investigation remains ongoing.
Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims
Drivers have a duty of care towards pedestrians, which includes being vigilant for those travelling by foot and, if a collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.
For those who lose a loved one in a pedestrian accident, filing a wrongful death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.
