Sacramento County, CA – On the morning of Monday, May 25, 2026, a collision in an apartment complex parking lot left a 15-month-old girl hospitalized with major injuries in the La Riviera neighborhood, according to KCRA.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 11:47 AM in the 9100 block of Tuolumne Drive.

Authorities said a father was with his toddler in the parking lot of an apartment complex when a person driving a Ford C-Max entered the lot and struck the child. Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputies were the first to arrive on scene and began CPR on the unresponsive child before emergency medical personnel took over.

The girl was transported to UC Davis Medical Center, where she was being treated for a skull fracture and other major injuries. The full extent of her injuries had not been confirmed at the time of reporting. The investigation remains ongoing.

Duty of Care Toward Pedestrians

Drivers have a duty of care towards pedestrians, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for pedestrians near the roadway and, if a collision occurs, staying with the victim to ensure they get proper medical treatment and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.

Children and Pedestrian Accidents

California Law requires drivers to exercise increased caution whenever they are near places that children are known to gather, like school zones and parks. Children are not expected to make rational, informed decisions about their own safety, and under the age of five, they cannot share any liability in an accident. Both negligent drivers and distracted caretakers could be found liable in accidents involving children.
