E-Bike Rider, 12, Injured in Crash with Vehicle on Thorp Ave in Greenfield

Greenfield, CA – On the afternoon of Wednesday, May 20, 2026, a collision between an e-bike and a vehicle left a 12-year-old boy seriously injured, according to KSBW.

The Greenfield Police Department reports that the accident took place in the 300 block of Thorp Avenue.

Authorities said the boy was riding the e-bike on the wrong side of the road, against the flow of traffic, when the collision occurred. Investigators determined the juvenile rider was at fault.

The boy sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to a Bay Area hospital, where he was expected to survive. The adult driver remained at the scene, cooperated with officers, and was determined to be licensed, insured, and not under the influence.

Greenfield Police noted that under California law, riders under 18 are required to wear helmets and must follow all traffic laws, including riding in the same direction as traffic. Riders must also be at least 16 years old to operate a Class 3 e-bike.

The department said it has maintained ongoing education and enforcement efforts in response to safety concerns involving young riders and had adopted a zero-tolerance approach to reckless e-bike and scooter riding earlier in the month.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Duty of Care Toward Bicyclists

Drivers have a duty of care towards bicyclists, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for bicyclists with whom they share the road and, if a collision occurs, staying with the victim to ensure they get proper medical treatment and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.

Personal Injury Claims

After a traffic accident, victims and their families often deal with unexpected financial burdens, such as medical bills, lost income, and, in the worst cases, burial costs. A personal injury claim allows accident victims to hold the at-fault party financially responsible for their costs of care.
