Oakland, CA – According to KRON, the pedestrians who were killed in a collision involving an underaged driver in the early hours of Sunday, May 17, 2026, have been identified as follows:
- Miguel Sanchez Ramirez, 44
- Charles Blackmon, 65, of Oakland
- Robert Dixon, 64, of Oakland
The Oakland Police Department reports that the accident took place shortly after 11:00 PM on 85th Avenue at International Boulevard.
Authorities said the vehicle was traveling northbound on 85th Avenue at an extremely high rate of speed when the driver made a reckless left turn onto International Boulevard, collided into parked cars, accelerated over a sidewalk, and struck several pedestrians. All three victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Five others were injured. Surveillance footage from the scene captured the suspect vehicle mounting the sidewalk as a woman narrowly escaped being struck by jumping into her vehicle.
The driver, a 17-year-old Oakland boy, attempted to flee the scene on foot before community members detained him until officers arrived. Good Samaritans also performed CPR on victims while awaiting emergency personnel. The teen was transported to a hospital and later arrested. He is facing potential vehicular manslaughter charges.
The Alameda County Coroner’s Office formally identified the three victims on Tuesday. Investigators are still working to determine whether the crash was intentional or accidental, and a toxicology test was expected to determine whether alcohol or drugs were factors. The investigation remains ongoing.
Accidents involving Minors
Until drivers reach the age of 18, California Law states that their parents have Vicarious Liability. This makes parents financially responsible for any damages their child causes while driving a vehicle. Vicarious Liability applies whether or not the parent was present with the child in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
Wrongful Death Claim
Even if a fatal accident doesn’t lead to criminal charges, families who lose a loved one can still file a wrongful death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide support to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of support for dependents of the deceased.
Personal Injury Claims
After a traffic accident, victims and their families often deal with unexpected financial burdens, such as medical bills, lost income, and, in the worst cases, burial costs. A personal injury claim allows accident victims to hold the at-fault party financially responsible for their costs of care.
