Walnut Creek, CA – In the early hours of Saturday, May 2, 2026, a wrong-way suspected DUI collision resulted in one fatality and left seven injured, according to KRON, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 11:23 PM on northbound Interstate 680 just north of Treat Boulevard.
Authorities said a woman driving a black Dodge Charger was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 680 at a high rate of speed when she collided with oncoming traffic. The crash ultimately involved six vehicles, including a gray Honda Accord, a light green Toyota Prius, a white Tesla, and additional vehicles, with airbags deployed in multiple cars.
A passenger in one of the northbound vehicles was pronounced dead at the scene. Four others, including the wrong-way driver, sustained major injuries, while three additional people sustained injuries.
All lanes of northbound Interstate 680 were blocked and a SigAlert was issued while emergency personnel worked the scene. Caltrans implemented a hard closure, with tow trucks from multiple services requested to remove six vehicles from the scene.
The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office and Concord Police Department assisted with traffic management and investigation, with Concord Police reviewing surveillance camera footage in connection with the case. All lanes were reopened at approximately 3:35 AM.
The wrong-way driver was transported to a local hospital and was later determined to have been impaired at the time of the crash. She was placed under arrest and remained hospitalized at the time of reporting. The investigation remains ongoing.
California DUI Law
Section 23153(a) of the California Vehicle Code (CVC) states that it is illegal for any driver to “Operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and, as a result, cause bodily injury to someone else.”
Wrongful Death Claim
Even if a fatal accident doesn’t lead to criminal charges, families who lose a loved one can still file a wrongful death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide support to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of support for dependents of the deceased.
Personal Injury Claims
When the actions of reckless drivers cause others to be injured, the cost of recovery should not fall on their victims. Filing a personal injury claim with the at-fault party’s insurance can provide compensation for medical bills and lost wages during recovery.
