Stanislaus County, CA – On the morning of Friday, May 1, 2026, a big rig collision resulting in a hazmat situation left one person with major injuries, according to FOX40.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 9:55 AM on southbound Interstate 5 north of Sperry Avenue.
Authorities said a Freightliner tractor-trailer carrying refrigerated liquid hydrogen struck the center median and overturned. A 43-year-old Bakersfield man who was in the truck’s sleeper berth sustained major injuries and was airlifted to a local hospital. The driver, a 58-year-old Fillmore man, sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital by ambulance.
Several witnesses reported detecting the odor of leaking gas following the crash. Interstate 5 was closed in both directions while emergency personnel assessed the hazmat situation, with an isolation distance established as a public safety precaution.
Southbound lanes were reopened at approximately 1:25 PM after the scene was determined to be safe. Northbound lanes remained closed until approximately 4:28 PM, when the overturned Freightliner was retrieved.
Authorities determined that alcohol and drugs do not appear to have been contributing factors in the collision. The investigation remains ongoing.
