Modesto, CA – The Modesto Bee has identified 76-year-old Jasbir Kaur of Modesto as the woman who lost her life in a pedestrian collision on the evening of Friday, February 20, 2026.
The Modesto Police Department reports that the accident took place around 6:30 PM near Pelandale Avenue just west of Prescott Road.
Investigators determined that Kaur had been walking north along a canal before she attempted to cross Pelandale Avenue. During the crossing, she entered the path of an eastbound vehicle and was struck.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene and rendered aid. Kaur was pronounced dead at the location of the collision. The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office later confirmed her identity and notified her next of kin in accordance with established procedure.
Police said the driver, also a Modesto resident, remained at the scene and cooperated fully with investigators. Authorities reported that drugs and alcohol do not appear to have been contributing factors.
The roadway remained open while officers conducted an on-scene investigation and documented evidence. The incident remains under active investigation, and officials are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or has relevant information to contact the Modesto Police Department.
Ongoing Investigations
Victims of traffic accidents and their families should be aware that authorities may fail to note or even misinterpret critical evidence at a crash site. One of the services that a Personal Injury Attorney can provide is to pursue follow-up investigations, which can reveal additional evidence to correct any errors made by previous investigators.
Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims
Drivers have a Duty of Care towards pedestrians, which includes being vigilant for those travelling by foot and, if a collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.
For those who lose a loved one in a pedestrian accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.
Should the at-fault driver evade authorities, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.
