Merced County, CA – On the morning of Thursday, February 5, 2026, a head-on collision killed a woman and injured four others after a driver attempted to pass slower traffic in foggy conditions, according to KSEE, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports the crash occurred around 8:30 AM on Oakdale Road east of Fisher Road.
Investigators said a 21-year-old woman from Turlock was driving a Toyota Prius eastbound at an unknown speed when she attempted to pass slower vehicles and crossed into the westbound lane.
Authorities said a Chevrolet traveling westbound attempted to steer to the right to avoid the Prius but was unable to prevent the collision. The two vehicles struck head-on within the westbound lane of Oakdale Road.
After the crash, bystanders attempted life-saving measures, including CPR, on the Prius driver, but she died from her injuries at the scene, CHP said.
The driver of the Chevrolet and three juveniles traveling in that vehicle sustained moderate to major injuries and were transported to a hospital for treatment. The crash remains under investigation.
Wrongful Death Claims
Even if a fatal accident doesn’t lead to criminal charges, families who lose a loved one can still file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide support to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income.
