Gonzales, CA – On the evening of Monday, January 19, 2026, a single-vehicle rollover crash in South Monterey County resulted in the death of Nicole Biihler, 23, the injury of an infant, and the arrest of Aja Hill, 23, on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to KSBW.
The California Highway Patrol reports the crash occurred around 5:32 PM on northbound River Road, just north of Gonzales River Road.
A preliminary investigation determined that a white Nissan SUV driven by Hill was traveling northbound when it veered off the road, struck a power pole, and rolled over. Authorities stated the SUV also carried a Biihler and a 2-year-old boy.
CHP said Hill sustained serious injuries, and Biihler was ejected from the vehicle during the crash. Both were transported to Natividad Medical Center, where Biihler was later pronounced dead. The child was also taken to the same hospital with injuries that were not immediately specified.
CHP arrested Hill on multiple charges, including DUI alcohol causing bodily injury, DUI with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 percent or higher causing bodily injury, vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, and child abuse with possible great bodily injury or death. Jail records indicate Hill was booked into Monterey County Jail with bail set at $50,000.
The crash remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol. As part of the investigation, officers conducted roadway closures, coordinated with utility providers due to downed power lines, and preserved evidence at the scene.
