Maricopa, CA – On the afternoon of Monday, December 15, 2025, a big rig versus pedestrian collision resulted in fatal injuries to 36-year-old Felipe Matamoros Lopez of Santa Maria, according to KBAK, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 4:19 PM near State Route 166 and Soda Lake Road.

Authorities said Matamoros Lopez had been driving a gray Honda Civic westbound on Highway 166 with four passengers when his vehicle struck a curb and embankment, prompting him to stop on the right-hand shoulder. After exiting the car and while attempting to re-enter the vehicle, he was struck by a westbound big rig. The impact caused fatal injuries, and Matamoros Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene by responding personnel.

Police stated that the driver of the big rig was not injured, and none of the passengers inside the Honda Civic sustained injuries. Emergency responders and the Kern County Coroner were dispatched as westbound lanes were blocked for an extended period while authorities conducted the investigation and managed traffic control.

Investigators indicated that alcohol was not suspected to be a factor in the collision. The cause of the crash remained under investigation, and officials noted that visibility issues related to the sun in the area may have contributed to traffic hazards at the time.
