Sacramento, CA – In the early hours of Friday, October 17, 2025, a pedestrian lost their life after being struck by a car on Highway 99 in south Sacramento, according to The Sacramento Bee, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the collision took place around 1:02 AM on northbound Highway 99, just south of Mack Road.
Authorities said the pedestrian was walking west across the northbound lanes when they stepped into the path of a Honda Accord sedan. The driver immediately pulled over to the shoulder and waited for emergency responders, who arrived within minutes. Despite life-saving efforts, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the pedestrian’s identity once family members have been notified. CHP officers took a statement from the driver, who remained cooperative throughout the investigation.
Authorities said that neither drugs nor alcohol were suspected as contributing factors in the crash. Northbound lanes of Highway 99 were closed for roughly two hours while investigators documented evidence and cleared the scene before reopening shortly after 3 AM.
The California Highway Patrol’s South Sacramento Office continues to investigate the cause of the fatal collision.
Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims
Drivers have a Duty of Care towards pedestrians, which includes being vigilant for those travelling by foot and, if a collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.
For those who lose a loved one in a pedestrian accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.
Should the at-fault driver avoid legal consequences, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.
