Bakersfield, CA – On the morning of Saturday, September 20, 2025, a collision between a big rig and a passenger vehicle left two people dead and one person injured, according to KBAK.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 11:44 AM at the intersection of Highway 65 and Famoso Road.
Investigators said a 76-year-old man drove a 2016 Honda Fit eastbound on Famoso Road and entered the intersection without stopping at the posted stop sign. At the same time, a 55-year-old man drove a 2014 Freightliner big rig southbound on Highway 65. The truck struck the driver’s side of the Honda with significant force.
The impact sent the Honda spinning out of control until it came to rest on the dirt shoulder east of the roadway. The Freightliner also lost control, struck a dirt embankment, and overturned. The overturned truck blocked the southbound lane and partially obstructed the northbound lane, forcing a complete closure while crews responded.
Both the Honda driver and his 66-year-old female passenger suffered fatal injuries from the crash. Emergency responders confirmed both victims had died at the scene.
The driver of the Freightliner sustained minor to moderate injuries. Medical personnel transported him to Kern Medical Hospital for treatment.
Authorities confirmed that neither alcohol nor drugs contributed to the collision.
The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash. Officials are working to determine the sequence of events that led to the deadly impact at the rural Kern County intersection.
Wrongful Death Claims
Even if a fatal accident doesn’t lead to criminal charges, families who lose a loved one can still file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide support to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income.
