Aristeo Cruz Jimenez, 31, Marcos Cruz Alia, 35, Killed in Hwy 183, Cooper Rd Crash with Big Rig in Salinas

Salinas, CA – In the late afternoon of Thursday, September 11, 2025, a three-vehicle collision killed Aristeo Cruz Jimenez, 31, and Marcos Cruz Alia, 35, and left another driver with major injuries, according to KSBW.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 4:16 PM on Highway 183, just south of Cooper Road.

Investigators explained that a red sedan stopped in the southbound lane while waiting to make a left turn. A gray GMC SUV approached from behind and struck the sedan at high speed. The force of the impact pushed the smaller car into the path of a northbound big rig.

The big rig collided directly with the sedan. The violent impact crushed the vehicle, leaving its occupants with catastrophic injuries. Emergency crews arrived quickly, but the collision left little chance for survival for two passengers.

Officials with the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Aristeo Cruz Jimenez of Port Hueneme and Marcos Cruz Alia of Salinas both died at the scene. Paramedics attempted to render aid, but the extent of their injuries made lifesaving efforts impossible.

The sedan’s driver, a 20-year-old man, survived but suffered major injuries. Medical crews transported him to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment. Authorities described his condition as serious and confirmed that doctors continue to monitor his recovery. They did not release his name.

The GMC SUV’s driver fled the scene immediately after the crash. Witnesses saw the vehicle speed away, leaving behind the damaged sedan and injured victims. CHP officers launched a search and later located the driver.

Investigators identified the suspect as a 19-year-old woman from Salinas. Authorities said they continue to question her about her actions leading up to the crash. Officials have not yet announced whether she will face arrest or criminal charges.

The crash forced the closure of Highway 183 for several hours. Emergency crews provided medical aid, recovered the victims, and removed the wreckage.

CHP stated that drugs or alcohol did not appear to play a role in the collision. Authorities encouraged witnesses to come forward with any additional information that could help the ongoing investigation.

California Hit-and-Run Laws

California Law requires drivers involved in a collision to stop their vehicle, notify law enforcement, and exchange insurance information with others involved. Failure to do so, considered to be a “hit-and-run,” is a misdemeanor in cases of property damage and a felony when someone has been injured.

Wrongful Death Claims

Even if a fatal accident doesn’t lead to criminal charges, families who lose a loved one can still file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide support to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income.
