Davis, CA – In the early morning of Tuesday, August 26, 2025, a motorcyclist lost their life in a crash involving a big rig on Interstate 80, according to The Sacramento Bee, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the accident took place around 4:45 AM on eastbound Interstate 80 west of Mace Boulevard.
Investigators said a Volvo big rig pulling trailers moved through the middle lane of a construction zone when a Harley-Davidson motorcycle struck the rear of the truck. The force of the impact ejected the rider onto the highway.
While the rider lay in the roadway, another vehicle struck the motorcyclist and continued traveling without stopping. First responders confirmed the rider died at the scene. The Yolo County Coroner’s Office will release the victim’s identity once the next of kin have been notified.
Officers initially sought a dump truck as the possible second vehicle, according to dispatch records, but investigators later clarified that the vehicle involved has not been identified. Crews removed a red and black Harley-Davidson Road King Classic from the scene as part of the investigation.
The crash forced authorities to close all eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 near Mace Boulevard for several hours. Officers diverted traffic while Davis firefighters, paramedics, and CHP personnel worked the scene. By 5:45 AM, crews reopened the far-left lane to ease congestion, though the remaining lanes stayed blocked until investigators documented evidence and tow trucks cleared the wreckage.
CHP officials said they found no evidence that alcohol or drugs contributed to the collision. Investigators continue to search for the vehicle that struck the rider after the initial crash and urge anyone with information to contact the Woodland CHP office.
