Bakersfield, CA – On the morning of Thursday, August 21, 2025, a bicyclist lost their life after being struck by a vehicle on Highline Road, according to KGET, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the crash occurred around 8:22 AM near Tehachapi Willow Springs Road.
Authorities said a cyclist was traveling along Highline Road when a vehicle struck them, resulting in fatal injuries at the scene. Emergency responders arrived promptly but were unable to save the bicyclist. CHP requested a long-term closure of Highline Road and directed northbound traffic onto alternate routes, including Stueber Road, while officers worked at the scene.
The Kern County Coroner’s Office was notified and responded to recover the victim and assist with the investigation. CHP investigators are gathering evidence, reviewing roadway conditions, and interviewing witnesses to determine the circumstances of the crash. Motorists were advised to expect delays as crews cleared debris and reopened lanes later in the morning.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
Bicycle Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims
Drivers have a Duty of Care towards bicyclists, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for bicyclists with whom they share the road and, if a fatal collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.
For those who lose a loved one in a bicycle accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.
Should the at-fault driver avoid legal consequences, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.
