Bakersfield, CA – On the morning of Thursday, August 14, 2025, a 65-year-old man riding a bicycle was fatally struck by a vehicle in northwest Bakersfield, according to KBAK, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the collision occurred at approximately 5:37 AM at the intersection of Olive Drive and Fruitvale Avenue.
A 57-year-old woman driving a 2020 Chrysler 300 eastbound on Olive Drive in the number two lane was approaching the intersection at an estimated 45 to 50 mph when the crash took place.
Investigators said the traffic signal was green for eastbound traffic at the time. The bicyclist was traveling southbound across Olive Drive through both westbound and eastbound lanes when he entered the path of the Chrysler. The impact caused fatal injuries, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver immediately stopped, remained on scene, and cooperated with law enforcement during the investigation.
CHP stated that alcohol or drugs do not appear to be factors for the driver, while it is unknown whether impairment played a role for the bicyclist. The crash remains under investigation.
Bicycle Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims
Drivers have a Duty of Care towards bicyclists, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for bicyclists with whom they share the road and, if a fatal collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.
For those who lose a loved one in a bicycle accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.
