Oakland, CA – On the morning of Sunday, July 13, 2025, a pedestrian was fatally injured in a hit-and-run collision while in a crosswalk, according to KRON.
The Oakland Police Department reports that the accident took place around 8:45 AM near the intersection of Fruitvale Avenue and East 27th Street.
Authorities say the pedestrian was crossing the street within a marked crosswalk when a vehicle struck them and then fled the scene before officers arrived. Emergency responders transported the victim to a nearby hospital, where they later died from their injuries. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
Shortly after the collision, police located the suspect vehicle and arrested the driver. Details regarding the suspect’s identity have not been made public. Investigators believe that alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the crash.
The intersection was temporarily closed while law enforcement officers documented the scene and gathered evidence.
Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or has additional information to contact the Oakland Police Department Traffic Investigation Unit.
California Hit-and-Run Laws
California Law requires drivers involved in a collision to stop their vehicle, notify law enforcement, and exchange insurance information with others involved. Failure to do so, considered to be a “hit-and-run,” is a misdemeanor in cases of property damage and a felony when someone has been injured.
Wrongful Death Claims
Even if a fatal accident doesn’t lead to criminal charges, families who lose a loved one can still file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide support to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income.
