Driver Killed in Hwy 17 Head-On Crash near Sugarloaf Rd in Santa Cruz Mountains

Santa Cruz County, CA On the night of Saturday, June 14, 2025, an elderly man was killed and four others were seriously injured after he reportedly drove into oncoming traffic, according to KSBW, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal

The California Highway Patrol reports that the crash occurred around 9:55 PM on Highway 17 near Sugarloaf Road in the Santa Cruz Mountains. 

CHP investigators say the 78-year-old Santa Cruz man was driving a Honda Element southbound when he crossed into the northbound lanes and collided head-on with a Tesla Model Y driven by a 19-year-old from Antioch. A Honda Accord following the Tesla then rear-ended it as a result of the initial impact.

Despite efforts from bystanders and emergency personnel, the driver of the Honda Element succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Four other individuals sustained serious injuries and were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Their conditions have not been disclosed.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and it is not yet known whether drugs or alcohol were factors. The identity of the deceased will be released by the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office.
