Pedestrian Killed in Crash near Hwy 49, Combie Rd in Placerville

Placerville, CA – On the night of Tuesday, March 18, 2025, a fatal vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision occurred on Highway 49, south of Combie Road, according to CHP Fatal with additional reporting from ABC10.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the crash happened around 10:09 PM when a 45-year-old man walked into the southbound lane of Highway 49 and was struck by a Lexus driven by an 88-year-old man. Emergency responders arrived to find the pedestrian lying in the roadway. Despite efforts to assist, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities stated that the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors for the driver, but it remains unclear whether they played a role in the pedestrian’s actions.

The southbound lane of Highway 49 was temporarily closed following the crash but was reopened later in the night. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.

CHP continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and urges anyone with additional information to contact their office.

Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims

Drivers have a Duty of Care towards pedestrians, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for pedestrians near the roadway and, if a fatal collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.

For those who lose a loved one in a pedestrian accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.
