Treatment For Traumatic Brain Injuries: What Victims Should Expect

There are a number of different treatment options for traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). Each TBI is unique, so the treatment plan will vary on a case-by-case basis depending on the severity and location of the injury. Here’s a general overview of what victims should expect:

Treatment For Mild TBIs

Mild TBIs, such as concussions, are typically treated with nothing more than rest and over-the-counter pain medications. You will need to rest both your mind and body during your recovery. This means you should not engage in physically or mentally challenging activities. Plenty of mental and physical rest can speed up your recovery and reduce the risk of suffering long-term complications. Your doctor will tell you when you are allowed to return to your normal level of activity.

Treatment For Moderate and Severe TBIs

Treating a moderate or severe TBI is difficult. First, doctors must focus on making sure the victim’s blood supply and oxygen are not cut off. To do this, the doctor may put the patient in a temporary coma. The brain will not need as much oxygen to survive in a coma, so this may be the best way to ensure the patient has enough oxygen.

Doctors must also quickly address swelling in the brain to prevent further damage. This may involve temporarily removing a piece of the skull to alleviate pressure or implanting a tube in the brain to drain fluid. Emergency surgery is also needed if the skull is fractured or there are hematomas in the brain.

Doctors can administer several types of medications to moderate and severe TBI victims, including anticoagulants and diuretics. These patients are at a high risk of having seizures, so doctors can also administer anti-seizure medication.

Moderate and severe TBIs can affect a victim’s ability to walk, talk, and perform other basic skills. For this reason, victims will need rehabilitation therapies once their condition has stabilized. Most victims will start rehabilitation while they are still in the hospital and continue it for months or even years in an outpatient rehabilitation facility.

Rehabilitation plans will vary depending on what skills the victim needs to improve upon. A number of medical professionals may be involved in rehabilitation, including psychiatrists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, physical therapists, and vocational counselors. These specialists help victims relearn skills that they have lost as a result of their TBI. The goal of this treatment is to help the patient master these skills so they are able to live independently.
