What is a “Trauma Center”?

Trauma Centers are departments within hospitals designed to handle the most-life threatening injuries at a moment’s notice. They are usually an extension of an emergency department.

Trauma centers feature surgeons and nurses with skills in specialized areas like burn wounds, brain injuries, and dealing with knife or gun wounds. Cutting-edge medical equipment is often available in a trauma ward.

Trauma Centers must meet strict standards in order to be certified by the state of California through Local Emergency Medical Services Agencies (LEMSA). They are categorized into levels I, II, II, and IV with Level I being the highest designation. There are also designations for pediatric trauma centers designed to deliver life-saving care to young accident victims.
