Rider on Horseback, Driver Injured in Merced County Crash on Santa Fe Dr

Merced, CA — In the early morning hours of Monday, October 5, 2026, a vehicle collided with a horseback rider, causing injuries to both the driver and the rider, according to KSEE/KGPE.

Authorities report that the accident took place around 5:40 AM on Santa Fe Drive in Merced County.

According to investigators, a 50-year-old man on horseback was attempting to cross Santa Fe Drive as a driver in a Nissan van traveling at a speed of approximately 55 MPH approached, traveling eastbound. The low visibility of the early morning darkness reportedly contributed to the crash as the driver collided with the horse, ejecting its rider.

The horse rider sustained major injuries, while the driver was left with moderate injuries. The condition of the horse was not reported.

Emergency responders secured an airlift for the horse rider to a nearby hospital and provided treatment for the Nissan driver at the scene.

The identities of those involved in this accident have not yet been released.

Merced County Accidents Involving Horses and Personal Injury Claims

According to California Vehicle Code 21050, a rider on horseback has all the legal rights and responsibilities as any driver of a motor vehicle they may share the road with.

Because California operates under the legal principle of comparative negligence, both the driver and rider involved in this accident might be determined to share responsibility for this accident. If the rider is found to have contributed to the accident, whether by not wearing highly reflective clothing or equipping his horse with reflective tack or LED lights (although it has not been confirmed by reports that this is the case), those factors may reduce the settlement he would be able to receive from a personal injury claim.

However, even if the rider is found partially negligent, they may still have grounds for a personal injury claim, and the same holds for the driver of the Nissan. A personal injury claim can help to compensate for medical expenses, pain and suffering, and property damage, which might include veterinary bills or the loss of the horse.
