Emeryville, CA — On the morning of Tuesday, October 13, 2026, Oakland city employee and motorcyclist Mark Crawford lost his life in a collision with a Tesla, according to the San Francisco Chronicle and Bay City News.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the fatal accident took place at 6:45 AM on westbound Interstate 80, near Powell Street and the MacArthur Maze.
Crawford died as a result of injuries sustained in a collision with a Tesla vehicle. The driver of the Tesla was not harmed.
While details as to what may have caused the crash are few, reporting from the SF Chronicle found that, approximately a half hour before, Crawford had sent a text message to his supervisor. The text indicated he was running late that morning.
Crawford had been employed with the Oakland Public Works Department as a member of its Keep Oakland Clean and Beautiful Team. His work reportedly focused on cleaning up illegal dumping and refuse related to homeless encampments.
He was also said to be a father, a member of the East Bay Dragons motorcycle club, and a 2001 graduate of the California School for the Deaf.
Authorities do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in this fatal crash, and no arrests have been made.
Fatal Motorcycle Accidents in Emeryville and Wrongful Death Claims
After a motorcycle crash with another vehicle, investigators examine evidence at the crash site and take statements from witnesses to determine how fault should be assigned. Since California law upholds the principle of comparative negligence, fault is not an all-or-nothing proposition. Instead, liability can be shared among multiple parties, and it does not depend on any party involved receiving criminal charges.
If the negligence of another party contributed even in part to the accident that took Crawford’s life, his family may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. A wrongful death claim can provide compensation for damages such as funeral expenses and the loss of support and companionship Crawford had provided his loved ones.
Should negligence on Crawford’s part also be found to have played a role, any settlement issued may be reduced in proportion to his own liability. However, that would not prevent his family from receiving some amount of compensation.
