Bakersfield, CA — Two more people who lost their lives in the fiery head-on crash that killed four on the morning of Monday, September 28, 2026, have been identified, according to KGET.
On Monday, October 12, the Kern County Coroner’s Office identified:
- Luis Alfonso Sanchez, 46, of Oakdale, one of the drivers involved
- Mia Camila Sanchez Espinoza, 18, of Oakdale, one of the passengers
Previously, the two others who lost their lives were identified as follows:
- Rebecca Jane Radovich, 75, of Tehachapi, the other driver
- Veronica Espinoza Roa, 53, of Oakdale, another passenger
According to authorities, the fatal crash took place around 10:25 AM on Highway 58 near Malaga Road.
The California Highway Patrol has stated that the two vehicles involved, a 2025 Hyundai Tucson and 2020 Toyota Corolla, were each traveling along Highway 58 east of Edison Road, approaching from opposite directions.
The Hyundai had reportedly been driving eastbound at an unknown rate of speed, when it veered left for unknown reasons. This led to the vehicle crossing over into oncoming traffic and colliding head-on with the Toyota.
The impact caused both vehicles to ignite with both drivers and both passengers still inside, and all four were pronounced dead at the scene. At this time, it remains unknown whether or not alcohol or drugs played any role in this fatal accident.
Fatal Car Accidents in Bakersfield and Wrongful Death Claims
When the negligent acts of others result in a loved one’s death, the costs that come with that loss should fall on those who were responsible. A wrongful death claim made with the insurer of the at-fault party allows grieving families to receive compensation for damages such as funeral expenses and the loss of companionship and support they provided.
In this particular accident, since it appears to have been the Hyundai that crossed into oncoming traffic, the Toyota driver’s family may have grounds for a wrongful death claim against the Hyundai driver.
The Hyundai driver’s family may also be able to pursue a claim if it is found that an outside factor — such as equipment failure or road conditions — contributed to the collision. Meanwhile, the family of the two passengers who lost their lives would have grounds for a claim even if their own driver had somehow been found at fault.
