Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-880 near Mission Blvd in Fremont

Fremont, CA — Early on the morning of Sunday, October 18, 2026, a chain reaction of vehicular collisions resulted in at least one death and an unknown number of injuries, according to KRON, with additional details from CHP Fatal.

According to CHP accident logs, at approximately 3:57 AM, the California Highway Patrol first received reports of a vehicle stopped at the southbound Interstate 880 connector to Mission Boulevard (State Route 262), with its driver out of the car.

This was followed by another report at 4:32 AM of a multi-vehicle crash involving seven to eight vehicles in an ongoing chain reaction blocking traffic lanes. According to one caller, a vehicle hit the car that had first been reported as stopped before spinning back into traffic and being struck again.

CHP appears to treat the incident as two separate crashes, one involving five vehicles and the other two. At least one person was killed. The accident reportedly trapped some within their vehicles.

A SigAlert was issued around 6:00 AM, and all lanes reopened around 10:30 AM.

Details remain unclear as to the identities of those involved and how many were injured or killed as a result. This is an ongoing investigation.

Multi-Vehicle Accidents in Fremont: Wrongful Death and Personal Injury Claims

After a multi-vehicle accident, investigators examine crash-site evidence and work with eyewitness accounts to establish to what degree each of those involved may be held at fault. Because California law operates under the legal principle of comparative negligence, fault is not an all-or-nothing proposition. It can be shared among multiple parties.

The family of the individual or individuals who lost their lives in this accident may have grounds for a wrongful death claim with the insurance providers of the drivers found to be at fault in this accident, while those injured may be able to file personal injury claims.

A wrongful death claim can compensate a grieving family for damages such as funeral expenses and the loss of support and companionship provided by the deceased. A personal injury claim can provide compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages associated with the accident.
