SR-99, Howsley Rd Crash in Sutter County Kills Gabriel Rodriguez Maldonado, 45, Maria Cristina Alarcon-Abarca, 42

Sutter County, CA — On the evening of Tuesday, October 6, 2026, a collision resulted in two residents of Chico losing their life, identified as Gabriel Rodriguez Maldonado, 45, and Maria Cristina Alarcon-Abarca, 42, according to FOX40, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.

The Sutter County Sheriff’s Office reports that the accident took place around 5:30 PM on State Route 99, south of Howsley Road, a rural stretch of highway near the border of Sutter and Yuba County.

According to initial investigations, it appears that Rodriguez Maldonado was driving a white Toyota Corrola southbound on SR-99 when, for reasons yet to be determined, he crossed over the dirt median into oncoming traffic and collided with a black Volvo SUV. The Toyota rolled over and came to a rest in a roadside ditch.

Both Rodriguez Maldonado and Alarcon-Abarca received fatal injuries and were pronounced deceased at the scene. They were identifed by the sheriff’s office the following day.

A third occupants of the Toyota, whose identity has not, as of yet, been released, also sustained injuries and received an airlift from emergency responders to UC Davis Medical Center. The Volvo driver was also transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate what circumstances led to this fatal accident, and no determination has been made regarding the possibility of driver intoxication having played a role.

Sutter County Car Accidents and Wrongful Death and Personal Injury Claims

In an accident like this one, while investigations are still in process, it is important to remember that initial findings may not yet tell the full story of what took place. If additional evidence brings to light external factors that contributed to the maneuver that caused Rodriguez Maldonado to enter oncoming traffic, such as equipment failure or neglect of roadway maintenance, his surviving family may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim, even if his own actions are determined to have been negligent. Any settlement from that claim would possibly be reduced by the degree to which Rodriguez Maldonado shared in responsibility for this fatal accident.

However, as his passenger, Alarcon-Abarca is highly unlikely to bear any responsibility for the crash. Her surviving family may be able to make a wrongful death claim with Rodriguez Maldonado’s insurance provider, as well as that of any outside parties whose negligence shares liability. A wrongful death claim can allow grieving families to receive compensation for damages such as funeral expenses and the loss of support and companionship provided by the deceased.

Similarly, both the third occupant of the Toyota and the driver of the Volvo may have grounds to pursue personal injury claims against Rodriguez Maldonado. The settlement from a personal injury claim can help recover medical expenses and other damages, including pain and suffering.
