UPDATE: Camila Mendoza Magallon, 16, Nicole Cotzojay, 15, Identified as Victims in Coffee Rd Pedestrian Crash in Modesto

Modesto, CA — The two teenage girls who were the victims of a pedestrian crash on the night of Friday, October 9, 2026, have been identified by family as 16-year-old Camila Mendoza Magallon and 15-year-old Nicole Cotzojay, according to ABC10.

Following this tragic collision, Camila lost her life as a result of her injuries, while Nicole has been hospitalized, with some uncertainty regarding her recovery. As of Sunday, October 11, Nicole remained unresponsive.

According to the Modesto Police Department, at around 8:48 PM, Camila and Nicole were struck by a vehicle traveling southbound on Coffee Road while they were attempting to cross at a marked crosswalk. The two girls, both students at Modesto High School, were attending a football game at Thomas Downey High School that night and had briefly left campus to have dinner.

While emergency services were called, officers stationed at Downey reportedly performed CPR on the girl while awaiting the arrival of paramedics. The driver involved in the collision remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Investigators do not believe driver intoxication to have been a factor in this accident.

The families of the two girls have set up GoFundMe pages for Nicole and Camila to provide assistance in this difficult time.

Further details about this tragic pedestrian accident have not yet been released, and the investigation is ongoing.

Modesto Car Accidents and Wrongful Death and Personal Injury Claims

While no amount of money can replace the life of a child, a wrongful death claim made against the at-fault driver’s insurance provider can offer support for grieving families, like Camila’s. A wrongful death claim can provide compensation for damages such as funeral expenses and the trauma experienced by having lost a daughter.

As for Nicole, the settlement from a personal injury claim can offer compensation for medical expenses — including surgeries, physical rehabilitation, permanent scarring, and mobility equipment — as well as pain and suffering.
