El Dorado Hills, CA – On the evening of Saturday, September 12, 2026, a single-vehicle Tesla crash resulted in a fiery crash that killed three people and left one hospitalized, according to FOX40, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 10:38 PM near Serrano Parkway west of Terracina Drive, a residential area within the Serrano community of El Dorado Hills.
Authorities said a vehicle struck a tree and caught fire, with the occupants still inside as flames spread. El Dorado Hills Fire Department crews responded to the scene. Three people were pronounced dead, and the fourth was transported to a hospital for treatment. Fire officials identified the impact with the tree as the cause of the fire.
Investigators later determined the vehicle was a Tesla that sustained major battery damage in the crash, raising concerns about a potential battery reignition hazard. El Dorado County Environmental Health responded to address the hazmat concern, and the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office activated its hazmat callout procedure.
A tow truck was later brought in to remove the vehicle once the hazard was addressed. The roadway was closed for several hours before reopening at approximately 4:24 AM.
El Dorado Hills Car Accidents and Wrongful Death and Personal Injury Claims
California law follows the principle of comparative negligence. This means that even if a driver is found partially at fault for an accident, they or their surviving family members may still pursue compensation if the negligence of another party, such as a defect in the vehicle’s battery system that contributed to the fire, played a role in the crash. Investigators with California law enforcement examine vehicle condition and roadway factors to determine what role outside factors may have played.
Because the vehicle’s battery damage created an ongoing hazmat concern well after the initial collision, questions about the battery’s design and how it responded to the impact could become a significant focus of any resulting claims. The families of those who died may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim, while the surviving occupant may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim, both of which can provide compensation for the losses specific to each type of claim.
