Taft, CA – On the evening of Saturday, September 26, 2026, a two-vehicle collision resulted in the deaths of Jose Ivan Martinez Birrueta, 29, and his brother Nathan Steve Martinez, 26, both of Bakersfield, and a third unidentified victim, according to KGET, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 7:41 PM at State Route 119 and Harrison Street.
Authorities said Martinez Birrueta and the unidentified victim were driving separate vehicles on State Route 119 when the two collided. Both vehicles caught fire and became fully engulfed, with no occupants seen exiting either vehicle.
Martinez was seated in the front right passenger seat of the vehicle with his brother, Martinez Birrueta, at the time of the crash. All three victims were determined to be deceased at the scene.
The Kern County Coroner’s Office formally identified Martinez Birrueta and Martinez, noting the two men were brothers, while the third victim’s identity is pending positive confirmation and notification of next of kin.
The Taft Police Department assisted at the scene. Caltrans was contacted for a hard closure, with both directions of State Route 119 closed at Harrison Street and Cedar Street. Two flatbed tows were requested for the vehicles. The coroner responded with an estimated arrival of 35 to 45 minutes. All lanes were reopened at approximately 11:38 PM.
