UPDATE: Suspect Brian Callaway, 44, of Modesto, Arrested after Isabel Ave, Stanley Blvd Hit-and-Run Injures Bicyclist in Livermore

Livermore, CA – On the evening of Saturday, August 15, 2026, a hit-and-run left a 64-year-old bicyclist critically injured and led to the arrest of Brian Callaway, 44, of Modesto, according to KRON.

The Livermore Police Department reports that the incident was reported around 9:54 PM on southbound Isabel Avenue just south of the Stanley Boulevard connector.

Authorities said officers found the bicyclist lying unconscious in the bike lane after Callaway allegedly crashed into him and fled the scene without stopping. The bicyclist reportedly sustained more than a dozen fractures and a traumatic brain injury.

According to a statement from the bicyclist’s family and attorneys, he was placed in a medically induced coma upon arrival at the hospital and remains in critical care, facing what they described as an “unimaginably difficult fight” for recovery, complicated by the brain injury.

Livermore Police said information from the public helped identify Callaway and his vehicle. He was arrested at his Modesto home three weeks after the crash and has been charged with one felony count of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in injury. Jail records show that Callaway was out of custody as of the following Tuesday morning.

Livermore Hit-and-Run Accidents and Personal Injury Claims

California law requires drivers to exercise an extra duty of care toward bicyclists they share the road with, due to their greater vulnerability to injury in a collision. When a bicycle accident takes place, motorists are required by law to stop and stay at the crash site, assist the bicyclist in acquiring medical aid, and cooperate with authorities when they arrive.

Failing to stay with an injured bicyclist after a crash is considered felony hit-and-run. If found guilty, Callaway may be determined to have committed “negligence per se,” increasing his share of liability for the victim’s injuries.

Independent of any criminal proceedings, the bicyclist may have grounds to pursue a personal injury claim with Callaway’s insurance provider. A personal injury claim can provide compensation for medical expenses, including the purchase of mobility devices and long-term rehabilitation, as well as pain and suffering and other damages related to the accident.
