Salinas, CA – On the evening of Sunday, September 6, 2026, a collision resulted in the death of Frank Joseph Mathura, 23, of Salinas, according to KSBW, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 8:12 PM on Harrison Road south of Sala Road.
Authorities said Mathura was riding his bicycle southbound when he lost control and fell into the roadway for reasons still under investigation. A 54-year-old man driving a GMC pickup southbound struck him. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Life-saving efforts were performed, but Mathura was pronounced dead at the scene.
CHP initially reported that Mathura had been struck by multiple vehicles, including one that fled the scene, but further investigation determined this was not the case.
The Salinas Police Department blocked the roadway in both directions, and County Roads shut down Harrison Road at its intersections with Sala Road and Russell Road during the investigation. The coroner was notified and responded to the scene.
CHP said the pickup driver was not under the influence, and it remains unknown whether Mathura was under the influence.
Salinas Bicycle Accidents and Wrongful Death Claims
California law follows the principle of comparative negligence. This means that even if a bicyclist’s own loss of control contributed to a crash, his surviving family members may still pursue compensation if the negligence of the driver who struck him, such as failure to keep a proper lookout or travel at a safe speed, also contributed to his death. Investigators with California law enforcement examine the actions of both parties, along with roadway and lighting conditions, to determine what role each may have played.
Mathura’s family may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim, which can provide compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, loss of consortium, and other damages related to the fatal accident.
