Bicyclist Fatally Struck at North First St, Trimble Rd in San Jose

San Jose, CA – In the early hours of Friday, September 4, 2026, a collision resulted in a bicyclist losing his life, marking the city’s 33rd traffic fatality of the year, according to KRON.

The San Jose Police Department reports that the accident took place around 4:20 AM at North First Street and Trimble Road.

Authorities said a man driving a gray 2024 Toyota sedan westbound on Trimble Road was passing through the intersection with North First Street on a green light when the vehicle struck a bicyclist riding northbound on First Street within the intersection crosswalk. As a result of the impact, the bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Drugs and alcohol do not appear to have been factors in the crash.

The fatality came one day after another bicyclist was killed in a separate collision with a Freightliner dump truck in the area of Tully Road and Lanai Avenue, marking the city’s 32nd traffic death of the year.

San Jose Bicycle Accidents and Wrongful Death Claims

California law requires drivers to exercise a heightened duty of care around bicyclists using marked crosswalks, and to remain alert for cross traffic even when proceeding on a green light. When a vehicle strikes a bicyclist lawfully within a crosswalk, investigators with California law enforcement examine sightlines, speed, and the driver’s attentiveness at the moment of impact to determine whether negligence contributed to the crash.

Given that this marks the second bicyclist fatality in San Jose within two days, the intersection’s design and signal timing, along with citywide traffic safety patterns, could become relevant considerations in any resulting claim. The bicyclist’s family may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim, which can provide compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, loss of consortium, and other damages related to the fatal accident.
