Hercules, CA – On the evening of Saturday, August 8, 2026, a chain-reaction collision involving 11 vehicles resulted in the death of a motorcyclist in his mid-20s from Yuba City, according to KRON, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 11:34 PM on westbound Interstate 80 west of State Route 4, near the Pinole Valley Road off-ramp.
Authorities said the motorcycle collided with a black Ford Maverick, ejecting the rider, who was then struck by another vehicle. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.
Several additional vehicles were reported in the center divide, and debris in the roadway caused further damage to other vehicles, including a red Toyota Corolla whose bumper became lodged underneath after being struck. Nine additional vehicles were ultimately involved in the chain-reaction crash. Two people suffered minor injuries in the subsequent collisions.
A traffic break was initiated, and the westbound State Route 4 to westbound Interstate 80 connector was shut down along with all westbound lanes of Interstate 80. A SigAlert was issued with an unknown estimated time of opening. Five tows were requested for the vehicles involved. The Contra Costa County Coroner was notified.
Westbound lanes were closed for approximately an hour and a half before the interstate was partially reopened, with all lanes fully open and the SigAlert cancelled at approximately 5:45 AM, after roughly four and a half hours of investigation.
The crash remains under investigation. The identity of the deceased had not been officially released at the time of reporting.
