Monterey, CA – On the evening of Sunday, August 16, 2026, a suspected DUI single-vehicle collision resulted in the death of Jerrod Tyson Chapman-Marshall, 19, of Livermore, and left two others injured, according to KSBW.
The Monterey Police Department reports that the accident took place around 5:14 PM near Barnett Segal and Iris Canyon Road.
Authorities said officers responded to reports of a crash and found a 2009 silver BMW coupe convertible that had struck a tree. The vehicle was occupied by the driver, identified as Sebastian Feliciano, 20, of Dublin, and three passengers. As a result of the impact, all four occupants sustained injuries and were transported to Natividad Medical Center for treatment.
Chapman-Marshall died from his injuries, while the other two passengers suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The Monterey County Coroner’s Office formally identified Chapman-Marshall following his death.
Feliciano showed signs of impairment, and a preliminary alcohol screening indicated his blood alcohol level was above 0.13 percent. He remains hospitalized and will be booked into the Monterey County Jail on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter once released. Police believe the vehicle traveled from Carmel to Monterey and may have been involved in other reckless driving incidents before striking the tree.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed the vehicle prior to the crash is asked to contact police.
Monterey DUI Accidents and Wrongful Death Claims
California law prohibits driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. When an impaired driver causes a single-vehicle collision resulting in the death of a passenger and injuries to others, that driver may be considered to have committed negligence per se, increasing his share of liability for the resulting harm.
Chapman-Marshall’s family may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim, while the two injured passengers may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim. These claims can provide compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages related to the accident.
Passenger Liability and Wrongful Death Claims
A driver’s liability coverage extends to those inside their vehicle as well as outside. In many cases, those passengers are someone who knows the driver personally. So, when a passenger is injured and their driver is found liable, they may feel reluctant to file a claim against the driver’s insurance.
In many cases, however, a wrongful death claim may be required for an insurer to offer a fair settlement. A personal injury attorney can facilitate this process and, as a neutral third party, help navigate any emotional complexities that may arise.
