Bakersfield, CA – On the morning of Thursday, August 20, 2026, a rear-end collision resulted in the death of a front-seat passenger and left three others injured, according to KGET.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 11:35 AM on westbound Highway 58 east of Fairfax Road.
Authorities said a 28-year-old Bakersfield man was driving a 2026 Hyundai Sonata westbound in the number two lane, carrying two female passengers. A 74-year-old Tehachapi woman was driving a 2024 Hyundai Santa Cruz directly behind him in the same lane.
As the Sonata slowed and came to a complete stop due to debris in the lane, the Santa Cruz driver, who was allegedly traveling at an unsafe speed, failed to slow in time, and the front of her vehicle struck the rear of the Sonata. As a result of the impact, both vehicles came to rest at the road’s center divider.
The Sonata’s front passenger sustained major injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Sonata’s driver and rear passenger sustained minor injuries and were transported to Kern Medical. The driver of the Santa Cruz sustained injuries ranging from moderate to major and was also transported to Kern Medical.
Alcohol and drugs were not factors in the collision. Anyone with information is asked to contact the CHP Bakersfield Area office. The identity of the deceased had not been released at the time of reporting.
