Big Sur, CA – On the evening of Saturday, August 15, 2026, a pedestrian collision resulted in the death of a 47-year-old man, according to KSBW, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 8:23 PM on State Route 1 near Palo Colorado.
Authorities said a 20-year-old Fresno man was driving a Dodge coupe northbound on Highway 1 as the pedestrian was walking west across the highway. The Dodge struck him. Bystanders performed CPR at the scene while the man remained unconscious with shallow breathing. A medical helicopter was checked for availability, though the transport was ultimately routed to Natividad Medical Center by ground due to traffic. The driver of the Dodge remained at the scene.
As a result of his injuries, the man was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. An evidence tow was requested for the Dodge. The Monterey County Coroner was notified. The roadway was reopened at approximately 10:15 PM.
CHP reminded the public that increased traffic in the area due to Car Week and the Timber Fire made extra safety precautions necessary when crossing roads. Alcohol and drugs do not appear to have been factors in the crash. The man’s identity had not been released at the time of reporting.
