Monterey County, CA – On the afternoon of Saturday, August 15, 2026, a collision between a big rig and a bicyclist resulted in the death of a 58-year-old Gonzales man, according to KSBW, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 2:08 PM at Old Stage Road and Esperanza Road.
Authorities said a 61-year-old Yuma, Arizona man was driving a green Kenworth big rig eastbound on Esperanza Road and approaching the intersection with Old Stage Road, where the bicyclist was riding near the same intersection. The big rig reportedly made a right turn onto Old Stage Road and collided with the bicycle. As a result of the impact, the bicyclist was found lying in the open lane, and fire personnel responded to the scene. He was pronounced dead.
Responding officers requested that the truck driver not be allowed back into the vehicle and checked for available dash cam footage. Monterey Police blocked the intersection at Hartnell, and fire personnel also assisted with traffic control. The Monterey County Coroner was notified and responded.
A heavy-duty evidence tow was requested for the big rig tractor. Media arrived on scene during the investigation. The roadway was reopened at approximately 6:00 PM.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Investigators have not determined whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash. The identity of the deceased had not been officially released at the time of reporting.
Monterey County Bicycle Accidents and Wrongful Death Claims
California law requires all drivers, including commercial truck operators, to exercise a heightened duty of care around bicyclists, remaining alert to their presence and checking blind spots before making turns. When a truck driver turns into the path of a bicyclist and causes a fatal collision, investigators with California law enforcement examine visibility, mirror checks, and the driver’s conduct to determine whether negligence contributed to the crash.
Regardless of the findings, the family of the deceased may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. A wrongful death claim can provide the family with compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, loss of consortium, and other damages related to the fatal accident.
